October 29th has been dubbed “World Charleston Day” in honour of the premiere of The Charleston on this day in 1923. The Charleston was composed by James P. Johnson with lyrics by Cecil Mack and The Charleston Dance became emblematic of the Roaring ’20s.
We have decided to celebrate World Charleston Day from this day forward in honour of the arrival of the 2020s and the 97th anniversary of the premiere of this iconic piece. In April and May of 2020 when musicians and dancers around the world were forced into isolation due to COVID-19, Atlantic Street Band decided to undertake a project of recording ourselves from our respective homes and sharing a rough mix of our recording with a group of dancers arranged by our friends in Eight Count swing dance group.
After several months, finally Chris was able to find the time to mix the audio properly and put together this video. We hope you’ll share the video and wish all your friends and family a “Happy World Charleston Day”.
